Sami Sheen has been in the public eye for quite some time. She has been open about the issues that exist in her relationship with her dad, Charlie Sheen. Now, ahead of the premiere of his new documentary, aka Charlie Sheen, he’s opening up about their fractured relationship.
Charlie, 60, and Denise Richards, 54, got married in 2002. They had Sami, 21, in 2004, and they had her sister, Lola, 20, in 2005. Sadly, they also announced their divorce the same year their second daughter was born.
Charlie recently spoke to PEOPLE, and he was asked about his relationship with Sami. The actor said, “There’s some stuff going on with Sami, but we’ll fix it.”
He then added, “That’s the deal we get when we show up [on Earth]. But what I try to tell my kids is, ‘Dude, you’re going to be here so long after I’m not. So try to hang on to at least 10% of what I’m saying. I guarantee it will come in handy somewhere, I promise it.'”
Charlie also spoke to Michael Strahan on Good Morning America. Regarding them having a path forward in their relationship, Charlie said, “As long as everybody is still in the game, there’s always a shot for a better tomorrow. I don’t really know what I did, that’s the problem. I don’t know what I’m supposed to apologize for. But I have absolute faith that this is not a forever thing.”
Charlie went on, “Her and I will work it out. It’s too valuable to let some moment destroy all of that.” He also briefly discussed his relationships with his other children. Charlie stated that they have “legitimate” relationships with “nothing to do with anything I do for a living.”
He then said, “Up to a certain age, kids have no [interest], you probably know, they don’t care what your ratings are.”
As mentioned, Sami has said quite a bit about where she stands with her dad. In April, she stated in a TikTok that she had not “spoken to my dad in a year.”
She also opened up about not speaking to him on Denise Richards & Her Wild Things. She said in an episode, “Me and my dad haven’t really spoken much in the past five months. It goes in very big chunks with him. I think for the first 13 years of my life, it was pretty bad, and then we were OK for a couple years, and now it’s just like, OK.”
Denise added in the episode, “I understand why Sami feels the way she does. It hasn’t always been perfect with he and Lola, either — with any of his kids. So I hope that he does recognize that because he’s missing out.”
Charlie’s new book, The Book of Sheen: A Memoir, hits bookshelves on September 9, and his new Netflix documentary, aka Charlie Sheen, premieres on the following day.
