Ava Dash recalled when she wasn’t on speaking terms with her dad, music executive Damon Dash, and addressed his past custody battle with her mom, fashion designer Rachel Roy. The Next Gen NYC star also shared when she decided to pay her own bills at age 16.
In the past, Ava has hinted that her relationship with Damon was up and down. But in a recent episode of the new season, Ava filmed a sweet scene with her mom Rachel before being interviewed at BravoCon.
On More Life with Carl Radke, Ava addressed when she wasn’t on speaking terms with her dad.
“It was hard,” she said, via @vanderpodrecaps on Instagram. “And I have a younger sister who’s eight years younger than me, so I feel like she’s like my daughter. My parents were going through a custody battle about her. I was aged out of it at that point. So I was in the middle a lot too, my whole life when we were at my dad’s, I was her babysitter. Like I was the one giving her a bath.”
She added, “[I made] sure she goes to bed on time. Like I helped my dad potty train her cause he was so annoyed that she was still in diapers. … I feel like that’s not really a normal thing. And so there were certain things where I felt like I was her rock when we were not at my mom’s.”
Carl asked if Ava was like “the leverage” in the divorce.
“Yeah, exactly. And so when I turned like 16, 17, I was just like, ‘You know what? You guys deal, I’m out. I’m gonna pay my own bills,’” she said. “You guys leave me out of it.”
“When my parents were getting a divorce, I was eight. I don’t know if this is a hot take, but I was so happy when they got divorced,” she said. “They’re just not meant for each other. They’re not each other’s person, and they would fight all the time. And I was in the middle. I didn’t want to watch that anymore. I wanted them to separate. I like begged.”
Ava said she got to a better place with her dad when she started paying her own bills.
“And I think seeing your parents as people … this is his first time on earth. Same with my mom. They’re trying their best,” she explained. “If I were in their shoes, I would have made the same choices, I have to assume.”
