Conservative activist Charlie Kirk passed away on September 10 after being shot at a university in Utah. Since then, the world has been reacting. This includes Selling the OC‘s Alex Hall, who compared him to civil rights activist Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Now, she’s facing backlash for her comments.
Alex joined Selling the OC during its first season in 2022. According to her LinkedIn profile, she started working at The Oppenheim Group in 2021.
After learning of Charlie’s death, Alex took to her Instagram Stories to speak about his legacy. The Selling the OC star wrote, “I’m just going to say it…I feel like this man is the MLK of our generation.”
“And that’s something that saddens me. History repeating itself is something that is 100% preventable, and I blame us,” she continued. “US as humans, US as individuals who allow ourselves to be influenced by society and whatever it may be that drives people to this depth of evil and feeling as though it’s right.”
“There is an undoubtedly amount of us who lack to have faith and surrender to fear,” Alex added. “Let this be your very tragic reminder that Violence is NEVER THE ANSWER.”
Regarding the backlash, someone on Reddit posted, “Please tell me we’re going to boycott Selling the OC once and for all. It’s just not fun anymore now the masks have come off.”
Another person said, “Definitely not watching anymore. This is beyond disgusting and disrespectful.” Someone else mentioned Charlie’s politics, saying, “The guy who was preaching the replacement theory???”

Someone else replied to Alex, “Please elaborate how you think he’s even comparable to MLK. I need to know.”
Of course, it’s okay to mourn Charlie, especially because murder is wrong. However, fans are taking issue with Alex comparing him to Martin Luther King Jr. because of the opinions Charlie expressed about Black people and other minorities. The New York Times highlighted some of the comments he made over the years.
According to the outlet, “Mr. Kirk believed the Civil Rights Act of 1964 was a destructive force in American politics, calling its passage a ‘mistake’ that he said has been turned into ‘an anti-white weapon.'”
Additionally, Charlie made disparaging remarks about MLK. The NYT wrote, “He also blamed the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. for the law and was highly critical of the slain civil rights leader, calling him an ‘awful’ person. Mr. Kirk said he desired a colorblind society but blamed the veneration of Dr. King for what he saw as America’s fixation on race.”
The outlet also quoted Charlie’s 2024 comments, where he said, “If I see a Black pilot, I’m going to be like, ‘Boy, I hope he’s qualified.'”
So far, Alex hasn’t responded to the backlash.
