Lake Rucker revealed if she ever reconsidered her friendship with Emmy Sharrett after her comments about Bradley Carter. The Southern Hospitality star also denied being “complicit” in the situation.
In the new season, Emmy accused Bradley of illegally recording her conversation after the reunion, and she claimed she felt “unsafe.” Leva Bonaparte has since called her out for making the “dangerous” micro-aggression against Bradley, an African American man. Emmy’s friend Lake tried to get her to understand, though Lake refused to walk away from their friendship.
On Gabbing with Gib, Lake was asked if she ever reconsidered her friendship with Emmy amid the controversy.
“Obviously, there was moments of frustration,” said Lake. “But, you know … people make mistakes. It was disheartening to see how long it took [Emmy] to learn from her mistakes. But this is how you educate people. This is how you stop the cycle. Racism is systematic at its core. It’s always going to happen. And this is how you educate people — by telling your friends that it’s not okay to do that, by reiterating [this], by enforcing [this].”
“I’m a loyal person. And so I never thought of it as like, ‘I can’t be friends with you anymore,'” she said. “I thought of it as now it’s my moment to teach my friend.”
Later on, Lake denied being “complicit” in the situation.
“I was never complicit in it,” she said. “And I want to preface that. I always told her what her mistakes were. It just wasn’t shown.”
“And that’s fine. And I know she made a lot of mistakes this season. So did I,” Lake continued. “And I hope that she’s learning from it. But I was never complicit in it. I was never like, you were right about this. It was more like, you need to make this right.”
She then addressed the idea of “blind loyalty.”
“I think Emmy and I disagree on what blind loyalty is,” she explained. “Because for me, blind loyalty is contradictory. You can’t be loyal to something that you’re blind to. And it’s not true loyalty if you’re letting your friends make this big mistake. So it just doesn’t make sense to me. Whereas she feels like her friends should defend her no matter what, in any circumstance. But your friends should be able to call you out whenever you’re wrong. And I did that.”
