Following an extended illness, Allison Calhoun Dennis, a descendant of John C. Calhoun, the seventh United States Vice President, tragically lost her life at the young age of 59.
“Their family requests privacy while they mourn with the sad loss,” a source close to Kathryn told PEOPLE on August 8. “They’re very private people and they want their time to cope.”
Kathryn’s reps did not offer a comment to the magazine regarding Allison’s death.
In April of this year, Kathryn opened up about her relationship with her mother to PEOPLE, saying that they were “incredibly close” and the best of friends.
“She stuck by me through so much. I don’t know what I would do without her,” Kathryn said.
Allison reportedly worked at the Santee Cooper water service before retiring. While the exact illness that took Allison’s life was not disclosed, she previously battled cancer.
“She was sick for a year and a half and I was taking care of her,” Kathryn shared. “She’s since been living with me, essentially. It’s great to have her around, especially because she’s so good with the kids [Kathryn’s son St. Julien, 3, and daughter Kensie, 5]. She’s amazing. She’s the best mom I could ever hope for with everything.”
Allison is survived by Kathryn, her husband, Luke Dennis, and her son, Luke Dennis, Jr. Our thoughts are with Kathryn and her family at this devastating time.
