After 23 years of marriage, Braunwyn Windham-Burke is officially divorcing her husband Sean. Two years ago, the Real Housewives of Orange County alum came out as a lesbian and remained legally married while she dated women. At the time, she described it as a “trial separation.”
After being fired from the Bravo show, Braunwyn lived partly in New York and partly in California, where her family resides.
According to court documents obtained by Radar Online, Braunwyn filed for divorce in Orange County on Monday. Her listed reason was “irreconcilable differences.”
The alum is reportedly seeking physical custody of their five children who are still minors. The two oldest children, Bella and Rowan, are now adults.
Although Braunwyn wants physical custody, she wishes to share legal custody with Sean.
Financially, the 44-year-old is asking for spousal support as well as a division of their personal property. Additionally, she requests Sean pay for her lawyer fees.
After the filing, the star made a statement to PEOPLE.
“Those who have followed our story probably aren’t surprised to find out how difficult attempting to create a ‘modern family’ is,” she said. “For the protection, integrity and love for my children, that’s all I will share as I navigate this new chapter.”
“I will always have so much love for the family we created that will continue to flourish and thrive.”
In the summer of last year, Braunwyn opened up about her decision to take a break from Sean.
“We really want to do what’s best for us — we are family, we’ve been together for 26 years,” said Braunwyn, via Radar. “That’s a lot and that’s something we don’t want to minimize — we want to honor that. I think having some space right now will give us some clarity.”
According to reports, Sean is also dating other people.
