Many reality TV fans indulged in Chrisley Knows Best when it was still on the air. After both Todd Chrisley and Julie Chrisley went to prison, their kids were left with many of the consequences of their parents’ actions. Now, Savannah Chrisley is opening up about her financial struggles since they have been behind bars.
As fans will recall, both Todd and Julie were convicted of federal fraud charges after they were found to have hidden their income from the IRS and engaged in a bank scheme. He was sentenced to 12 years behind bars, and she got seven for her role in the various schemes.
Savannah opened up on her podcast Unlocked about what life has been like since her parents were locked up. She first discussed the misconceptions people have about her financial status. She said, via PEOPLE, “People comment and will say, like, ‘Oh, I feel so sorry for you, living off of mom and daddy’s stolen money. And ‘You’re rich, it’s easy, stop trying to act like it’s so hard.”
The podcast host continued, “I struggled. Like, I know what it feels like to not know how you’re going to pay your bills that month. ‘Cause I was left with three mortgages, and the lawyers, and kids.”
She then discussed how her parents being sent to prison impacted her career hopes beyond reality TV.
“I was just getting into real estate, and, like, your first year, you’re pretty much, you know, like, working for every deal that you get. And that’s the thing, it’s like, people have this misconception that I’m sitting on millions of dollars, and I’m like, ‘If you know where it is, please walk me to it. I would love to see it.”
She continued, “But I know what it’s like to struggle. I used to not go, have to go to the grocery store and look at — I would just buy whatever. I was at a point to where I had to tell the kids no to stuff. And I put their needs before mine. I don’t know how I did it, but somehow I was able to do it.”
Additionally, Savannah said that the government planned to take three percent of what she got for selling her parent’s house. However, the legal team negotiated the amount they took to 1.5 percent.
She said, “They would not allow me to sell the house if they didn’t get the money.”
Also on the September 10 episode of her Unlocked podcast, Savannah opened up about a time when she had to flee the airport after mistakenly packing a gun in her luggage while with her friend Holly.
“I had a glock,” Savannah shared. “Not just a gun, a glock.”
“We went through and they were like, ‘Ma’am we’re gonna need to search your bag,’” Savannah recalled. “And Holly moved the gate and we jumped over and just ran.”
Despite running out of the TSA line, Savannah says she obtained her gun legally.
“I believe in our second amendment rights so I got it very legally,” she shared. “In Texas, you don’t have to have a carry permit so nothing was wrong with it, but it wouldn’t have been seen too kindly upon.”
