Heather Dubrow and her husband, Dr. Terry Dubrow, lost nearly $6 million when they sold their five-bedroom, nine-bathroom Beverly Hills home earlier this summer.
Speaking of the financial loss on their new podcast, the Real Housewives of Orange County couple described their planned remodel of the property, which was previously owned by late Italian film producer Dino De Laurentiis, as a “gigantic fail.”
“We lost $5.8 [million]. I’ll tell you why,” Terry shared on the August 27 episode of iHeartRadio’s Between Us, via Us Weekly. “We bought the supplies for the guest house. We did a lot of stuff to the property. We occasionally stayed there. … If you’re in Los Angeles and you sell a house that’s over [$10 million], you have to pay 5.5 percent of the gross to Los Angeles.”
As RHOC fans may recall, Heather, 56, and Terry, 66, purchased the Beverly Hills residence in 2023 for $16.1 million and put it up for sale for $25 million in March of this year with the help of Million Dollar Listing: Los Angeles cast members Josh Altman, 46, and Josh Flagg, 40.
“How many Josh’s does it take to sell the best 8.3-acre tennis court estate in Beverly Hills?” Heather asked on Instagram at the time.
While the home ultimately sold, Heather and Terry didn’t get nearly what they were asking. Instead, they failed to break even as it sold for just $16.5 million — $8.5 million under ask.
“It was a gigantic fail,” Terry stated. “So if you don’t like us, congratulations. We bombed. We got killed on that house.”
Because Heather and Terry had spent so much not only on renovations, but also on designs and supplies, the home, which featured a spa, nine-foot ceilings, and over a dozen parking spaces, ended up costing them millions.
“If you have to do a remodel, if you want to build a home, you really have to vet your builders,” Heather explained on the podcast. “You must get a budget up front. … You have to stay firm, and you have to do your own research.”
On a July episode of RHOC, Heather explained that after planning to live in the home once it was complete, Terry decided to sell due to the high cost of renovations and the discovery of asbestos.
“It’s hard when you know you’re walking away from a project to put one more dime in it,” she shared.
Additionally, with only their youngest child, Ace, 14, still living with them, they didn’t really need the space and already own a $14 million penthouse nearby.
“First, I thought of this as a failure because I can’t imagine not seeing the project through the end,” she said. “But the more I think about this house, the more I realize how not viable it truly is for our family. … The universe is telling us to go elsewhere.”
Also on the show, Heather estimated that she and Terry would have to put $32 million into the home, explaining that around $3 million would be needed solely to landscape the massive property.
The Real Housewives of Orange County season 19 airs Thursdays at 8/7c on Bravo.
