The self-proclaimed Grande Dame of the Real Housewives of Potomac, Karen Huger, found herself the topic of conversation on the season 3 premiere of the show but not for the reasons Karen would have hoped.
Following the season two reunion last year, a report came out revealing that Karen’s husband Ray Huger owed $1.5 million in federal taxes, while his company owed $3 million to the IRS.
This news was stunning but made sense at the same time after Karen abruptly sold her home in Potomac, claiming she wanted to downgrade, only to move into a bigger home in a less expensive city. This led to many suspicions from her castmates on whether or not she was having financial issues.
So what is the latest with Karen and her finances? Well, she is sharing an update in a new interview.
According to Karen, she “was in shock” when the Washington Post broke the story last summer, as she claims she was completely unaware about Ray’s massive tax debt.
“My thing was to be there for him. And I’ll say that bad things happen to great people. Ray’s a phenomenal human being. I could say it scared me. We didn’t know what we were gonna do, how we were gonna make it. I thought the world was coming to an end,” Karen revealed to Bravo’s Daily Dish. “But he assured me that everything was going to be OK, as long as I stayed in my lane. And that’s what he meant, too. Let him handle it. It’s his business.”
She goes on to state that Ray has since taken care of things, implying he has struck a deal with the IRS to cover his tax debt when it comes to the $1.468 million lien filed against him.
“He has settled, and they have a deal, and they’re good. So we’re in a great place, and I’m grateful. I’m grateful that Ray’s my hubby. I’m grateful that my kids are my kids. And I’m grateful that I still have great health to enjoy this life,” said Karen. “I just rebirthed, so it’s just a great place to be in. Long time getting here, though. But it’s in the rearview mirror now!”
When it comes to her castmates’ reaction to her money issues, Karen reveals she “expected more support than attack” from them, and expressed she was also “disappointed in them.”
“Shame on them. It’s almost, I feel like, I slit my arm and put it across a shark tank for a minute when I watched it. But again, it’s in the past. I’m in a great place. I wouldn’t trade places for anything. I’m the one that should’ve gone through this. I don’t think they could’ve handled this,” she said. “They’re not strong enough, because that’s really childish to talk about someone behind their back, in my opinion. So I’m glad it’s me and not them.”
The RHOP airs Sunday nights on Bravo at 10/9c.
