During a recent podcast appearance, the Teen Mom OG dad opened up about his current relationship with wife Catelynn, admitting that while they are not living together at this time, he doesn’t consider them “separated” and feels they’re “doing great.”
“It’s funny because we actually don’t even call it separation anymore. We say, ‘Let’s just do 30 days of self-reflection time. You get to focus on you, I get to focus on me. We’ll continue to do couples’ therapy,’” Tyler explained to Us Weekly during their “Watch With Us” podcast. “We’ve got a great therapist who works really good with us, so [we’re] kind of following her advice on top of the separation, whatever you wanna call it. We call it 30 days of self-reflection – just positive terminology here.”
Tyler and Catelynn welcomed their first child Carly, who they put up for adoption, in 2009 while appearing on MTV’s 16 & Pregnant. In the years since, they’ve become husband and wife and welcomed one more child, daughter Novalee.
Ahead of the birth of their third child, three-year-old Novalee is splitting her time between her parents’ two homes.
“We’ve been letting her kind of doing whatever she feels like she needs to do. Sometimes she’ll come hang out with me for a couple hours then she’ll have to go home. We still eat dinner together,” he explained. “When you say ‘separation,’ everyone’s like, ‘Oh my god, a separation?” It’s not like we’re seeing other people or we’re not talking at all or not spending time with each other. I’ve been here at the house fixing stuff up while she and Nova have been here. Honestly [we’re] taking our space when we need it. Nova’s been really surprisingly taking it really well. She’s been really great with everything.”
During Monday night’s episode of Teen Mom OG, Tyler was seen having a conversation with his dad, Butch Baltierra, during which he admitted to wishing he’d been with other women before settling down with Catelynn. One day later, Tyler stood by his comments, explaining that anyone would be lying if they said they didn’t have the same regret.
“My dad’s funny because he’s the type of person where he automatically assumes everyone’s like him – some player, some raw dog player or something,” he said. “I had to kind of reiterate to him, ‘Listen, yeah of course, because I’m a human being. But the main goal is to stay with my wife and live this life. We love each other.’ It’s crazy too because when you do grow up with each other, no one can really understand the bond. There is no explanation for it. It’s hard for people like my dad, who’s been in prison his whole life and never really had a serious adult relationship, to relate. It’s different.”
Also during the podcast interview, Tyler explained where he and Catelynn came up with the name Tezlee for their third child.
“We were looking at names and we were just writing it down and I don’t know … I saw Lesley and I’m like, ‘No, not Lesley’ It’s kinda weird. We just put different words together, letters together,” he said. “We wanted to keep Lee in there ’cause [of our daughter] Novalee, so we just played around with it and then Tezlee [came up.] I sent Cate a whole list of different names, of ones that I looked at, saw or kind of combined myself and she took that one!”
After revealing the name on Teen Mom OG on Monday, a number of Twitter users expressed their dislike of the name, some of which suggested it was a “horrible” selection.
Below are some of their responses:
Lmaoooo tezlee?? Holy trailer park name.

Despite the name backlash online, Tyler and his family are looking forward to their new addition, especially his daughter Novalee.
“She’s so excited. It’s so funny. She constantly is like, ‘Oh, my baby! I can’t wait to see my baby.’ She keeps calling it her baby and I’m like, ‘You know what, if she wants to pretend it’s her own little live baby doll, go for it!’ If that makes the transition way easier from single child to a sibling, go for it,” he said. “She’s like, ‘She can hear me right?’ We’re like, ‘Yeah, she can hear you now.’ She’ll say stuff to [Cate’s] belly. It’s so funny. She’s so excited. She can’t wait.”
Luckily for Catelynn, her pregnancy has been going smoothly over the past several months.
“Everything’s been A-OK this whole time. It’s a lot smoother than we expected, especially after the miscarriage, we didn’t know exactly how that would affect anything,” Tyler admitted. “Would it affect anything? What happens? Do we have to take any extra precautions because of that during this one? Everything’s been going great.”
