Eboni K. Williams discusses her “starter marriage” and explains why she was a bad wife before dishing on a camera-hungry man she recently went out with. Plus, she reveals whether she considers any of her co-stars an actual friend.
The Real Housewives of New York City newcomer has been full of surprises lately as she continues to open up about her life. Though she’s discussed her ex-fiancé both on and off the show, she had yet to go into depth on why her marriage failed until a recent interview.
“I had a starter marriage,” she confirmed on the July 21 episode of the Reality Life with Kate Casey podcast. “It was about all of ten months. I was all of 27, so not so young. I was old enough, but not emotionally mature enough, and not educated enough around the requirements of real partnership. Could I have learned those lessons another way other than, like, a divorce? I don’t know.”
The 37-year-old star went on to admit she was deeply “ashamed” about the divorce, so she tried to keep it under wraps as long as she could.
“I know I carried a lot of shame around. I was deeply ashamed, deeply ashamed of being divorced at 28,” she candidly shared. “And [I] didn’t want to tell anybody, and was deeply embarrassed around it. And then I’ve worked through it in therapy since, and in prayer.”
As for why she and her former husband couldn’t make it work, Eboni seemingly placed the blame on herself.
“It was a wake-up call for the kind of partner I needed to be,” she explained. “I recognized how short I was showing up as a wife. I was a sh*t wife! I was not doing any of the things that I now know to do, and know I can do ’cause I’ve done many of them in my most recent relationship.”
Despite the heartbreak of her divorce, as well as her failed relationship with her ex-fiancé, the reality star is back on the dating scene as she recently went out with two men while visiting Los Angeles. However, one of the men won’t be getting a second date with the former pageant queen as she felt he was a little fame-hungry.
“One recent date, I did get the vibe that maybe he wanted some camera time,” she quipped. “I know that’s cliché and annoying, but he kind of told on himself [with] the way he was moving. He’s like, ‘Oh, let’s take a picture.” And I’m like, ‘Dude it’s our first date! What are we taking a picture for?’ That kind of stuff’s not cute to me.”
She added, “I don’t like a man who needs that much attention. That’s just me. If anybody’s gonna be in front of a camera it’s me, not your *ss! So, good night!”
Though Eboni didn’t spend a great deal of time talking about her co-stars, despite all the drama currently surrounding the show, she was asked if she’s developed a genuine friendship with any of her castmates.
“Some, yeah,” she snarked. “I mean, some have definitely transcended from castmates to friendships that will be lifelong because we’ve had those conversations.”
“For me, [friendship] is based on a simple evaluation, [and] that’s how aligned we are on the most basic humanitarian values. That’s it!” she continued. “And, do I just enjoy you? So, once those two are met, that’s a friend to me.”
She didn’t name who these friends are, but judging by other recent interviews, she’s likely referring to Leah McSweeney and Sonja Morgan.
The Real Housewives of New York City season 13 airs Tuesday nights on Bravo at 9/8c.
