Mary Cosby and her 19-year-old son, Robert Cosby Jr., appeared in court on Friday to address charges related to an incident that reportedly took place in April.
After being charged with misdemeanors, including contributing to the delinquency of a minor and unlawfully providing shelter to a runaway, the Real Housewives of Salt Lake City cast member attended a short hearing, where their attorney, Clayton Simms, shed more light on the situation.
“The charges sound sinister, but the reality of the situation is much different,” the lawyer told FOX 13, via a report from Radar Online, after the hearing, adding, “Robert’s girlfriend’s mother didn’t want him hanging out, so she called the police.”
The attorney went on to throw some shade at the officers involved.
“Rather than the Salt Lake City Department focusing on real crime, they’re turning into the relationship police,” he said. “The basis of this case is just a misunderstanding. We think there’s absolutely no merit to the case.”
If Mary and Robert are found guilty of crimes relating to his girlfriend, who he may or may not still be dating, the Cosbys, who have pleaded not guilty, will be forced to pay a $1,380 fine.
During the hearing on Friday, Mary and Robert’s legal team asked Justice Court Judge Katherine Peters to continue their hearing until December, which she agreed to do.
As the Cosbys face a couple of misdemeanor charges, Mary’s RHOSLC castmate, Jen Shah, is facing much more dire legal circumstances after being arrested in March on charges of conspiracy to commit wire fraud in connection with a years-long, multi-state telemarketing scheme.
Jen is facing a maximum of 50 years behind bars for her alleged crimes, including 30 years for the wire fraud charges and another 20 years for the money laundering charges.
Following Jen’s arrest, attorney Ronald Richards, who is currently investigating Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star Erika Jayne, said he believes Jen is “on a collision course for a horrible, horrible outcome.”
“She’s charged in a place that most Americans don’t understand very well and that’s called the Southern District of New York. You’re up against prosecutors that are so much better than anybody you’re going to hire and they’re treated with the highest level of respect by the judges in that district,” he explained on the Juicy Scoop podcast.
“It has to be clear that you are innocent, not like what’s going on in this case where you have all these documented frauds, multiple guilty pleas, but everybody is guilty but Jen Shah,” he added.
