Southern Charm Kathryn Dennis Interview

Southern Charm star Kathryn Dennis has been spending tons of time with her two children, four-year-old daughter Kensington and two-year-old son Saint, in recent months, but according to a new interview, she’s still dealing with the pain of losing custody.

Speaking to People magazine, Kathryn, 25, spoke candidly about losing custody of her children in 2016 after testing positive for marijuana, cocaine and opiates.

“It’s absolutely not something I thought I’d ever face. It all happened so fast. Losing my kids, I just remember falling on my knees and breaking down like every single day,” Kathryn explained to PEOPLE. “When you don’t have your children with you and they’re at such fragile, young ages, it just feels like part of you is not there.”

“Your heart is walking around outside of you and you can’t see them or talk to them,” she continued. “It’s out of your control but these are two humans who you gave life to. It’s just so unnatural and I can’t describe it in any other way. It’s probably one of the hardest things you can go through in life in general. It’s hard spiritually, mentally, and physically; you can just become drained by the guilt and shame.”

While Kathryn doesn’t yet have joint custody of Kensington and Saint with her former boyfriend Thomas Ravenel, she’s gained more visitation with the children recently and has now detached herself from all of the negative times she went through in the past.

“I’ve got my kids in my life a lot more than in the past and I don’t know, that’s really all I need. I’m just in a good place,” she said. “Time is very cherished, and I try and fill it with things that are meaningful and bond with them. You look at it differently when you realize it can be taken away.”

In another recent interview, Kathryn opened up about dating after the end of her on-again, off-again romance with Thomas, who is currently being investigated for a number of alleged sexual assaults, one of which was reported by their former nanny.

“[I’m] definitely open” to dating, “but it’s slim pickings in Charleston,” she explained to People. “I’d love to meet someone who isn’t from here.”

“I have like so much baggage with Thomas here,” she continued. “I feel like a lot of guys are intimated by me — I’m a 6-foot redhead.”

“I’m looking for someone that has enough life experience that I could consider as a father figure for my children,” she added. “The end goal is to get married. Someone more mature, not 55 but definitely older… [I’m looking for] someone who can actually make me laugh and takes life a little less seriously.”
