After attending the event with the entire cast of The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills season 12, including newbies Sanela Diana Jenkins and Sheree Zampino, Erika took it upon herself to alter her caption after Lisa’s alleged Donna Summer-inspired look led to claims of blackfishing against the soap actress turned reality star.
On January 20, Erika posted a side-by-side photo of herself and Lisa. And, as revealed in a screenshot shared by Bravo Snark Side on Instagram, she compared the two of them to “Donna and Jerry” in the caption, seemingly giving a nod to Donna and model Jerry Hall, the former girlfriend of Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger.
Once her post went live, Erika was flooded with comments from her fans and followers, many of whom deemed the look inappropriate and offensive.
“If that is Donna Summers…..Rinna be hitting up the black face!” one person said.
“It’s giving blackface,” another agreed.
A third said that Lisa was staying “problematic” by “blackfishing.”
“That face makeup is not ok [Lisa Rinna],” someone else wrote.
Other people compared Lisa’s look to the Diana Ross-inspired costume Real Housewives of New York City star Luann de Lesseps sported during a Halloween party thrown by co-star Dorinda Medley in October 2017.
“First Luann, now Rinna?!?!” an Instagram user asked.
“Rinna and Lu both sure do love that lowkey blackface,” another added.
Following the controversy, Erika returned to Instagram, where she changed her caption from “Donna and Jerry” to “Cher and Jerry.”
Although Lisa has yet to speak out about the claims being made against her, Luann did choose to address the scandal she faced years ago.
“I had makeup on, but not anything that would make me look– I had like, tanning cream on,” she told Entertainment Tonight. “I think that the tanning cream, and the big hairpiece I have, which was amazing… I was doing my version of Diana Ross.”
“I was being an impersonator for Halloween,” she continued. “I didn’t mean to offend anyone by being Diana Ross for Halloween, it just didn’t even kind of enter my mind… and all of a sudden it became a thing,” she added. “I’m so sorry. I don’t want it to be a thing, so I apologize if I have offended.”
The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills season 12 will premiere on Bravo sometime later this year.
