Katie Maloney confirmed she had an abortion 10 years ago.
On Tuesday’s episode of Vanderpump Rules, Katie and husband Tom Schwartz sat down at their $1.9 million Los Angeles home to discuss their ongoing efforts to start a family, and the couple looked back on a decision they made early on in their relationship to terminate a surprise pregnancy.
“I was filling out the paperwork. It was asking about, like, if you had ever been pregnant before so that’s definitely gonna come up in our consultation,” Katie told Tom as she looked forward to an upcoming appointment with her doctor.
“It’s okay. I feel like we made the best decision at the time,” Tom replied.
“I think we absolutely made the best decision because listen, it was so early in our relationship,” Katie agreed.
According to Tom, he and Katie were “uncertain about [their] future” at that time and hardly knew what to expect “the next day.”
“Exactly. I mean, I knew I wanted to have kids but I just knew that was not the time in my life,” Katie noted.
In a cast confessional, Katie further explained the status of her and Tom’s relationship at the time she found herself pregnant.
“I actually had an abortion about 10 years ago,” she revealed. “Tom and I had been together for a year, and it was not pretty, like, we fought all the time and I wanted it to work out, but I was just like if anything, like he’s gonna leave and I’m going to be a single mom. I think everyone, everyone, every woman, every person, should be able to decide what’s best for them.”
While Tom admitted that he wonders, “What if,” from time to time, he noted in his own confessional that he was far from ready to be a dad.
“When I found out Katie was pregnant, I just was like, this can’t be. We use condoms. We’re always so careful. And I have, like, less than $300 in my bank account,” Tom recalled.
As the scene continued, Tom speculated upon whether or not he and Katie’s relationship would have made it had they chosen to move forward with the pregnancy.
“I wonder if we would have stayed together?” Tom asked.
“I don’t think so,” Katie responded. And Tom felt the same.
“I think we would’ve broke up, like, this is too much, but we would’ve been good parents,” he stated.
Also in Tom’s confessional, the Pump Rules star and TomTom co-owner said that if Katie did want to have the baby, he would have been supportive of her decision and done his best to step up as a father.
“If she wanted to have the kid, I would have manned up and found a way to make it work if I had to, but, you know, I’ll never know what would have happened,” he continued.
Although Katie and Tom weren’t ready for a child a decade ago, they’re looking forward to becoming parents in the future.
As Tom told Katie, “You’re gonna be such a good mom and I’m gonna be such a good dad. There’s not a lot of things that I’m a 100% about in life, but I’m 100% sure I’m gonna be a good dad.”
“Yeah,” Katie agreed.
Vanderpump Rules season nine airs Tuesdays at 9/8c on Bravo.
